alex lost his right arm and leg in a taxi accident in 1998. he was only 18 and on his way back from his home town, lady frere in transkei, to cape town. the taxis that travel between rural transkei and the major centers are often overcrowded and not roadworthy, with drivers who speed and use drugs or alcohol to cope with the long hours behind the wheel. the driver who rolled the taxi alex was traveling in kept
drinking alcohol out of a coke tin despite the protests of the paying passengers.
